YEAR ONE CURRICULUM
Learning Challenge Curriculum
Why do we like to be beside the seaside?
Year 1 will be exploring all of the wonders of the seaside, both past and present.
We will be comparing the coast with our own local area and using maps to find each place. We will be asking questions like:
Why do we go to the seaside and what do we do there?
How is the seaside different from Burley?
Where in the UK is the seaside located?
How have seaside holidays changed since Victorian times?
We will be launching our topic in the first week back with a seaside ‘wow’ day where the children will be participating in a number of exciting seaside themed activities.
Would you rather be a bird, a bug or a plant?
Year 1 will begin our investigations about birds, mini-beasts and plants. We will identify and name a variety of common plants and describe their basic structure. We will also be identifying and naming a variety of common animals which are birds. We will be beginning our learning with an exciting visit to Harlow Carr Gardens, as well as making time to explore our beautiful school grounds.
- Can you name a variety of common wild and garden plants, and trees?
- Can you identify the petals, stem, leaf and root of a plant?
- Can you identify the roots, trunk, branches and leaves of a tree?
- How is an animal best suited to its environment?

Calling all volunteers!
Last year the children enjoyed and greatly benefitted from numerous parent volunteers who supported our curriculum themes, reading and invaluable school trips. This is a real strength of our school, and one which we are very keen to continue! Please do get in touch if you think you can help in any way.
Phonics Screening Check
All children in Year 1 are required to complete a phonics screening check. It is not a formal test and your child will probably not even realise that it is one. We aim to keep it short and fun and usually find that the children enjoy spending time playing the word ‘games’ with their teacher. Attached is an information sheet about how and when the check will be administered. For further information, please click here.
Information about how we complete the check at Burley Oaks can be found here.
