 YEAR ONE CURRICULUM this term....

Theme-Led Curriculum

What’s in the Toy shop window?

We will be continuing our travels through time, with a new focus on how our toys nowadays are different from those in the past. We will become toy detectives, exploring toys old and new and will be talking to our grandparents about which toys they enjoyed playing with when they were children. We will use our new knowledge about toys to help us design and make a brand new toy. Our trip to Bradford Industrial Museum will give us a chance to handle historical artefacts and role play what daily life would have been like in the 1950s with characters in costume.

Science                      Why are humans not like tigers?

Year 1 will continue to explore why humans are not like tigers. We will be carrying out investigations to help us understand the difference between herbivores, omnivores and carnivores. We look forward to inviting family members in to school to create our very own tiger habitats during our ‘Come and Do’ sessions.

Calling all Volunteers!

Last year the children enjoyed and greatly benefitted from numerous parent volunteers who supported our curriculum themes, reading and invaluable school trips. This is a real strength of our school, and one which we are very keen to continue!  Please do get in touch if you think you can help in any way.

Phonics Screening Check

All children in Year 1 are required to complete a phonics screening check. It is not a formal test and your child will probably not even realise that it is one. We aim to keep it short and fun and usually find that the children enjoy spending time playing the word ‘games’ with their teacher. Attached is an information sheet about how and when the check will be administered. For further information, please click here

Information about how we complete the check at Burley Oaks can be found here.
